Technical Writer

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Research, write, proofread, and edit user manuals and online help for ICONICS software products. 
  • ​Create screenshots for inclusion in user guides and technical documentation. 
  • Take highly technical information and convey it effectively to a broad spectrum of target audiences, including end users who may have limited technical experience. 
  • Use version control to provide traceability and maintain multiple versions of documentation to correspond with multiple versions of software releases. 
  • Work closely with an international team of software development engineers, quality assurance techs, and technical support engineers to ensure documentation accuracy and process user feedback. 
  • Use task management software to track documentation tasks and keep up with software product updates. 

Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communications, English, or Computer Science, or a post-secondary degree in an equivalent discipline (or equivalent experience). 
  • ​Three years of professional writing experience (technical documentation experience preferred). 
  • Comfortable with ongoing self-learning of new software and new software features in development. 
  • Detail-oriented, with a commitment to produce high-quality written materials. 
  • Experience or familiarity with the software development process, including iterative builds, betas, testing, and release. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (high-level proficiency in Microsoft Word a plus). 
  • Analytical, creative, and lateral thinker. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to be proactive and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, small-company environment. 
  • Desire for continuing self-improvement and learning. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Microsoft TFS for task management and bug tracking. 
  • ​Experience with MadCap Flare, Author-It, or other single-source-multiple-output help-authoring software. 
  • Experience with applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, and multimedia and/or desktop publishing tools. 
  • Aptitude for working under limited supervision in a fast-paced, small-company environment with rapidly changing requirements. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot HTML source code.
