“Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions' GENESIS is a great software for fast and reliable integration.”
The Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) or the Volturnean Autonomous Agency was founded in 1899 as a hydroelectric power company. In 2001, EAV became a regional holding company for public transport companies. Ten years later, the regional government of Campania decided to merge the railway companies SFSM, SEPSA, and MetroCampania NordEst with the holding company to form the new transport company EAV. The merger was completed in 2012.
Today, EAV is fully owned by the Italian Campania region and manages the ex-Circumvesuviana narrow-gauge network, the standard-gauge ex-SEPSA, and the ex-Alifana/ MetroCampania NordEst lines. Additionally, the EAV took over other transport companies in the Naples area to operate the suburban railways, the Arcobaleno metro line, several bus lines, and a funicular (cable railroad).

EAV wanted to integrate all station subsystems—including:
—into a single SCADA platform. The agency therefore needed an automation system and software capable of tracking all operational data and providing superior visualization to help personnel manage and control every aspect of operations.
EAV selected system integrator and design consultant AsiWork S.r.l. to handle system design and specification, as well as installation, configuration, commissioning, and service. Based in Rome, Italy, AsiWork develops efficient and functional operational systems and employs experts with experience in a wide range of industrial and infrastructure sectors, including railway stations, subways, tunnels, and buildings. AsiWork chose Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions software because they have worked with the company since 1987 and trust both the technology and the partnership.
The project with EAV has been evolving since 2012. AsiWork first provided a SCADA system for several railway stations on Naples’ “Circumflegrea” line. The initiative includes planned upgrades, new implementations, and expansions to other stations along the “Circumflegrea and Cumana” lines. To date, AsiWork has designed, built, and installed SCADA systems at:
The work involved engineering the entire SCADA system, configuring PLCs, constructing automation and control panels, creating video pages for the supervision systems, and setting up alarms and trends for both local and remote operational management.
The project began with GENESIS32™, which interfaced with ABB PLCs and station systems—such as fire control panels, access control, CCTV, gates, ticketing, escalators, and elevators—using OPC protocols from Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions products, as well as serial Modbus, Modbus TCP, and web services. In 2015, AsiWork proposed and implemented an upgrade from GENESIS32 to GENESIS64, replacing PC hardware and CPUs connected to ABB PLCs.
Thanks to the tools provided by Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions, the transition to GENESIS64 was smooth and problem-free. Today, the system architecture varies by station, with some using local servers and others running client–server setups. For centralized supervision, a GENESIS64 development station was installed on a virtual server, along with WebHMI licenses, at the EAV control center in Piazza Garibaldi. The GENESIS64 system now monitors approximately 4,000 hardware and software data points each day.

The Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) continues to invest in expanding and modernizing its rail network through advanced SCADA integration. Upcoming initiatives include:
Beyond these immediate projects, AsiWork is actively participating in the engineering and system architecture for additional railway and metro stations in Naples. These developments, planned for the coming years, will continue to expand EAV’s capabilities, ensuring a safer, more efficient, and more resilient transportation network for the region.
